Sedation for Periodontal and Implant Care

For patients who feel anxious, need longer procedures, or find it hard to stay numb, sedation can make periodontal and implant care more comfortable. Sedation and anesthesia are provided by an independent, licensed anesthesia group working alongside our periodontists. Whether sedation is appropriate depends on your health history and the procedure.

Who provides your sedation

Your periodontist performs the procedure. A separate, independent anesthesia group provides and monitors your sedation or anesthesia throughout. The anesthesia provider reviews your health history with you beforehand and explains which options are suitable, the risks, how to prepare, and the need for an escort home.

Safety and licensing

In Virginia, sedation and anesthesia in dental offices are regulated by the Virginia Board of Dentistry. Your sedation is provided by licensed anesthesia professionals from the independent anesthesia group, not by our periodontists.

Common questions

Can I drive after sedation?

No. For most forms of sedation, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you afterward. We provide written instructions before your appointment.
