Dr. Monika Madan is a periodontist: a dentist with additional specialty training in the gums, the bone that supports the teeth, and dental implants. She cares for patients at our Virginia Beach Town Center and Suffolk Harbour View offices.
Dr. Madan completed her specialty training at the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, where she earned a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Periodontology. She also earned a Doctor of Science (DSc) in Oral Biology at Boston University. Her dental degree, a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), is from the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences.
At Boston University's Department of Periodontology and Oral Biology, her laboratory research looked at how Porphyromonas gingivalis, a bacterium involved in gum disease, and the body's inflammatory response relate to atherosclerosis, the hardening of the arteries that is a major cause of heart disease. That work was published in the Journal of Immunology (2009) and Atherosclerosis (2008).
Her care follows the practice's priorities: keep natural teeth whenever it is clinically appropriate; when a tooth cannot be predictably kept, plan the implant carefully around the bone, the gums, and the final restoration; and work alongside each patient's own dentist.

No. You can request a consultation directly. If your dentist refers you, we keep them informed and you return to their office for restorative and routine care.
What does a periodontist do?
A periodontist is a dentist who has completed additional specialty training, typically three years after dental school, focused on the gums, the bone that supports the teeth, and dental implants. Periodontists usually work alongside your general dentist.
What was Dr. Madan's research about?
At Boston University she studied, in laboratory models, how a gum-disease bacterium and inflammation relate to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Studies in people show an association between gum disease and heart disease, but an association does not prove cause, and treating gum disease should not be expected to prevent heart disease.
