What peri-implantitis is
Peri-implant mucositis is inflammation of the soft tissue around an implant. It is the earlier stage and may be reversible with treatment. Peri-implantitis is inflammation with loss of the supporting bone.
A history of periodontitis and smoking have been identified as risk indicators for peri-implant disease, so patients with these risk factors may benefit from closer monitoring.
What happens at an evaluation
Your periodontist examines the tissue around the implant, measures it, and reviews X-rays to check the bone. Treatment depends on what is found. It may begin with non-surgical cleaning and improved home care; more advanced cases may need surgical treatment, with regenerative procedures where suitable.
We evaluate implants regardless of where they were placed. Bring any records you have, including the implant system if you know it, and we will share our findings with your dentist.
Helping your implant last
- Daily cleaning around the implant, as shown by your dental team
- Regular professional implant maintenance
- Prompt evaluation of any change, rather than waiting
Common questions
Can you check an implant another office placed?
Yes. We evaluate and maintain implants placed by other offices and coordinate with your dentist.
Is a bleeding implant an emergency?
Usually not, but it is a reason to have it checked soon. Call the office if you have significant swelling, pain, or a fever.
